The RAPEX system was created to ensure high level of protection of consumer health and safety in the EU common market. Its legal basis are set forth in Directive 2001/95/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 3 December 2001 on general product safety.
The priority objective of the system is to ensure quick exchange of information between the Member States and the European Commission on hazardous products and on the actions that were undertaken in a given country to eliminate or limit the products’ marketing or use.
RAPEX covers all non-food consumer products or products which are highly probable to be used by consumers. The system does not contain information on pharmaceutics, medical products, fodder or food – these are covered by a different system (RASFF). Consumers may access the information in the RAPEX system by visiting the European Commission website.
